Sections of Switching from Traditional to Digital Imaging
- Reasons for Implementing a Digital Imaging System
- A Strategy for Implementation
- Upgrading and Maintenance

Summary
Equipping a dental practice with digital imaging technology is a significant undertaking that requires careful consideration and planning. Many dentists take a piecemeal approach, in which various imaging devices (such as an intraoral camera, a digital camera and a digital radiography system) are bought successively. This method can be detrimental if it is not part of a comprehensive and long-term strategy. Dentists may end up with different devices from several vendors that are poorly integrated or incompatible. In this chapter, we consider the reasons and the timing for switching to digital imaging technology, strategies for implementing a comprehensive digital imaging system, and upgrading and maintaining the system.

Objectives
After studying this chapter, you should be able to:

  • explain the rationale for implementing a comprehensive digital imaging system
  • list how digital imaging can improve the immediacy, quality control, flexibility and availability of images in dental practice
  • discuss aspects of software integration, conformance with standards and workflow that should be considered when implementing a digital imaging system
  • assess security implications of using digital imaging systems
  • describe an implementation strategy
  • assess your practice information technology infrastructure in light of a planned imaging system implementation

Benefits
Understanding the material in this chapter will increase your ability to:

  • decide whether or not, and if so, when, to implement a digital imaging system
  • develop a sound strategy for implementation and maintenance
  • implement a digital imaging system that functions reliably and securely
  • increase the chances that implementing a digital imaging system will yield the benefits you expect
